Cultural Competence Mission

As a therapist, I believe it is my duty to find harmony between:

-educating myself on the influences various cultures have on individuals, and

-understanding that you are the sole expert of your cultural identity.

It is my job to cater the styles and techniques of therapy to fit the unique individual you are, including the many facets of your culture.  I make a promise to bring awareness to my own culture and how it has affected my way of thinking and interacting with the world. With this awareness, I aim to maintain openness and gratitude for the wisdom of your cultural background.

Cultural competence is also a vow to work towards ending all forms of oppression and to move towards celebration of diversity. I recognize systems of privilege and oppression as traumatic, and invite my clients to bring these wounds into the work we do together. In any healthy relationship, building safety and trust takes time. I nonetheless hope to take that initial step with you by vowing to this intention of safety and by inviting all parts of your experience of oppression–grief, guilt, numbness, anger, and other emotions–they are all welcome here.

Together, I hope to celebrate your cultural background in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, spirituality, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, and ability.
