Goodbyes- A Poem

As my roots grow deeper into the soil,

I am never alone.

As my branches tickle the curves of the moon,

I am never alone.

And as my ego sheds layers of bark

As I offer home to birds and squirrels,

I am never again alone.

For you have grown beside me,

Our toes wiggling together as we drank the soil’s wealth.

When cities are built between our trunks,

And I lose sight of your branches,

Our autumn leaves will crash together like waves,

Covering the sidewalks in the reds and oranges of softening hearts.

Whether huddled together under the same blanket of snow,

Or budding our leaves in woods separated by oceans,

Swaying in the same brushstrokes,

We will always give the wind its voice.
